His resume includes co-ownership of Vita Nova Winery with Jim Clendenen/Bob Lundquist and the famous Wine Cask Restaurant in Santa Barbara where he was owner/sommelier.  Doug founded Magerum in 2001 with a specific mission in mind: Creating handcrafted wines using only the highest quality grapes and letting the terroir shine through to give them their own personality.  He has stayed true to this mission and kept his production small enough to ensure his high standards are always met or exceeded.  Tonight we will have the pleasure of tasting four of his outstanding wines (possibly a fifth!) paired with the cuisine of Wilshire’s widely acclaimed Chef Brendan Collins.  Gourmet Wine Getaways’ wine expert Peter Kerr will be joined by Doug to discuss the secrets of wine/food pairing & answer any and all wine-related questions. \nIn support of our dinner partners\, each guest is requested to bring a bottle of wine (suggested value $50pp/$100/couple) that will be donated to the Santa Monica Education Foundation’s upcoming Wine Auction Fundraiser.  Guests bringing a bottle to donate will be entered into a special drawing for a bottle of Margerum wine. \nJoin us for a night filled with great food\, wine and conversation.  Come alone or with friends-just don’t miss it! \nHors D’Oeuvres\nChicken liver mousse with Huckleberry Ham\nMarinated White Shrimp Ceviche\nChilled Cucumber Soup\n2017 Margerum Riviera Rose\nMenu*\nSmoked Salmon latke with chive creme fraiche & confit lemon\n2017 Margerum Sybarite Sauvignon Blanc\, Happy Canyon (WS-91points) \nDuck confit ravioli\, sauce charcuterie\n2016 Margerum M5 (Red Rhone blend) (WS-91 points)\nPan Roast Rib deckle with smoked fingerling potatoes\, bernaise\n2016 Margerum Uber Syrah\nApple Crumble\, vanilla ice cream\nfreshly brewed coffee/tea \nPrepaid reservations are essential as seating is limited.  Cancellations will only be accepted up to 48 hours in advance.* Vegetarian menu option is available and must be requested when reservation is initially made. \nReservations: (310) 586-1707\nWilshire Restaurant\, www.wilshirerestaurant.com  \n \n  \n   \n  \nGourmet Wine Getaways (GWG) strongly encourages guests to utilize Lyft\, Uber & other safe methods of transport in getting to and from wine events. SUMMARY:Zaca Mesa Vineyards wines to be featured in Wine Tasting Dinner at Cantalini's\, Playa del Rey
DESCRIPTION:Zaca Mesa’s history dates back to 1973 & it is one of the first wineries in the Santa Barbara County wine region.  Ken Brown\, later of Byron fame\, was the first winemaker.   Ken drafted some soon- to- be regional superstars to join him: Adam Tomlach\, Jim Clendenen and Bob Lindquist.  This amazing team started the winery on its road to success and saw them begin their exclusive attention to Rhone varietals in 1978 with Santa Barbara County’s first Syrah plantings.  Many years and wine awards later\, winemaker Kristin Bryden is continuing the successful Rhone tradition.  The Cantalini culinary team has created an incredible menu to showcase four of these wines including the premier of Inceptive\, a lovely GSM blend & the chance to enjoy a ’12 Mesa Reserve Syrah (both perfect candidates for your Thanksgiving table).  This is our first dinner at this wonderful Italian fixture in Playa del Rey and our last public dinner for 2018. SUMMARY:Death of winery owner cancels Rock Wall Wine Co. dinner
DESCRIPTION:The unexpected death of winery founder/owner Kent Rosenblum has caused the planned wine tasting dinner at Belcampo in Santa Monica to be cancelled.  Gourmet Wine Getaways\, in conjunction with Belcampo Restaurant in Santa Monica jointly decided to take this action after hearing the tragic news.  The dinner will be rescheduled for 2019 when Co-owner and head winemaker Shauna Rosenblum can attend. \nGWG’s Peter Kerr and Bart Lynn invite fans of Kent and his wine to join them for an “unofficial tribute” at Belcampo starting approximately at 7:00 p.m. on the same night\, September 24.  There will be no set menu-attendees can order off Belcampo’s great regular menu and pay individually. \nGuests attending the “Tribute to Kent Rosenblum” are encouraged to bring a bottle of Rosenblum(Kent’s former label) or Rock Wall wine to enjoy.   Belcampo will waive their regular corkage fee on any botttle of wine from these two wineries.  Or\, you can enjoy one of Rock Wall’s great reds\, Rosso di Fiore\, at a very special “by the glass” price.  Additionally\, Belcampo will offer each paying guest a $10 Belcampo gift certificate (good towards a future lunch or dinner at the restaurant). \nIf you plan to attend\, please mention “Kent’s tribute” when you phone Belcampo to reserve (No Open Table reservations\, please).  If you can’t make it right at 7 p.m.\, no worries. SUMMARY:Duckhorn Vineyards featured at Kapoor's Akbar in DTLA
DESCRIPTION:Duckhorn’s history spans over 40 years.  You might call owner Dan Duckhorn one of the Napa pioneers\, not because he was the first winery (he lost that race by over 100 years!)\, but rather due to the fact that he was among the first to focus on the production of world-class  Napa Valley Merlot-a mere stepchild to the Cabs that Napa was already famous for.  Dan was convinced it could be done and put his passion and energy into his first harvest (1978).  The rest\, shall we say\, is history. In fact\, he was dubbed “Mr. Merlot” by the NY Times-something he is very proud of.  Duckhorn wines are now made under the guidance of Winemaker Renee Ary.  She is only the 4th winemaker in the winery’s 40+ year history.  Tonight\, a Prosecco Welcome Reception will be followed by a       4-course meal\, pairing the gourmet Indian cuisine of owner/chef Avinash Kapoor with 4 outstanding Duckhorn wines (including a Merlot).  This is a rare opportunity to enjoy these highly rated & sought after wines\, so grab some friends and join us for the first wine dinner at this exciting new venue in DTLA.  Gourmet Wine Getaways’ Peter Kerr will discuss & explore these wine & food pairings. \nWelcome Reception\nA refreshing Bubbly to cleanse your palate and knock off the road dust\n\nMenu\nCrispy Samosa pastries stuffed with potatoes\, peas & spices\n2017 Duckhorn Sauvignon Blanc (WS-90)\nChef Avi’s Fresh White Fish with Seasonal Veggies\n2016 Duckhorn Chardonnay\, Napa Valley\nShahi Lamb \nSlow-cooked marinated lamb in a cashew & tomato cream sauce \n2014 Duckhorn Merlot\, Napa Valley (WS-92)\nBeef Dopiazza\n             Chunks of tender beef\, onions(double onions)\, & garlic in a delicious sauce seasoned with cardamoms\, cloves & pepper                       Special Basmati Rice \n2015 Duckhorn Cabernet Sauvignon  (WE-90) \nfreshly brewed coffee/tea\nPrepaid reservations are essential as seating is limited.  Cancellations will only be accepted up to 48 hours in advance. \nReservations: (213) 372-5590\nKapoor’s Akbar\, http://www.kapoorsakbar.com \n \n  \n   \n  \nGourmet Wine Getaways (GWG) strongly encourages guests to utilize Lyft\, Uber & other safe methods of transport in getting to and from wine events. He is one of the original “Rhone Rangers” and has been making world-class wine for the past 35 years.   Bob founded Qupé in ’82 while working with Jim Clendenen at Zaca Mesa Winery.  He left Zaca Mesa the following year to dedicate his full time and energy to his new winery.  And the rest\, as they say\, is history.  Qupé has been selected as a Winery of the Year by Wine & Spirits Magazine for each of the last 19 years- an amazing achievement! \nTonight\, Bob will be on hand to give us the “inside scoop” from the winery and perhaps talk a little Dodger baseball (his other passion).  We’ll enjoy 2 of his outstanding Syrahs plus 2 other great wines that reveal the breadth of Bob’s talents.  Chef Brendan Collins and the culinary team at Wilshire have creatively paired each wine with a gourmet food course designed to bring out the best in the wine (and the food).  Join us for what is sure to be a night to remember! \nTray Passed Hors D’Oeuvres\nGrilled Oysters (smoked hay\,chartreuse butter)\nGoat Cheese Tart (Chantenay carrot\, maple\,pistachio)\n2016 Qupe Chardonnay\, Santa Barbara County\nMenu\nTwo Tartares\nBeets\, mustard greens\,granola \nBeef\, egg yolk\, labneh\, lavash \n2013 Qupe Roussanne\, Bien Nacido Hillside Estate\nHerb-crusted Halibut\nDuxelles\, shallot puree\, jus lie \n2015 Qupe Syrah\, Central Coast\nRoasted Duck Breast\nGolden Beets\, grilled plums\, long pepper jus \n2013 Qupe Syrah\, Bien Nacido Hillside Estate\nStone fruit tart\nCreme fraiche ice cream \nfreshly brewed coffee/tea \nPrepaid reservations are essential as seating is limited.  Cancellations will only be accepted up to 48 hours in advance. \nReservations: (310) 586-1707\nWilshire Restaurant\, www.wilshirerestaurant.com  \n \n  \n   \n  \nGourmet Wine Getaways (GWG) strongly encourages guests to utilize Lyft\, Uber & other safe methods of transport in getting to and from wine events. DESCRIPTION:Tivoli Cafe & Gourmet Wine Getaways\nProudly present \nA GOURMET WINE TASTING DINNER \nFeaturing the wines of \nSLYD Winery\nSanta Barbara County\, California\nHost: Peter D. Kerr\, Gourmet Wine Getaways Wine Consultant\nSpecial Guest: Owner/Winemaker Spencer Daley \nTuesday\, October 24\, 2017 at 7:00 PM\n$89 per person\, inclusive of tax and gratuity \nOwner/Winemaker Spencer Daley got a relatively early start in the wine business at the age of 13. He and his father literally were garagistes- starting with a couple of rows of grapes in their backyard and making wine 4 years later in their garage from those home-grown Sangiovese and Cabernet grapes. Fast forward to 2015 where\, at age 25\, Spencer is premiering four of his own wines from Santa Barbara County grapes using those same fundamentals he learned from his dad 12 years ago. The name SLYD comes from Spencer’s love of music and is continued in the naming of each of his wines. The connection in his mind is obvious- wine\, like music\, reflects the artist who created it. And\, enjoyment of both is highly influenced by mood and surroundings. Luckily\, the Tivoli culinary team has “composed” the perfect food courses to pair with these four wonderful wines. Join Spencer & Gourmet Wine Getaways’ wine expert Peter Kerr as they discuss the Central Coast wine region\, the latest from the winery & Spencer’s take on the world of music. Who knows- we might just hear Spencer play a little on his guitar if the mood and surroundings are right (which they will be)! \nWelcome Reception\nTomato\, Burrata and Prosciutto\n2016 Medley Rosé \nMENU\nMahi-Mahi on a bed of fresh spinach\, topped with lemon-butter & caper sauce\n2016 “SLYD does Sauvignon Blanc” \nPenne al Ragu with organic ground beef sauce\n2015 Trio (Syrah\, Sangiovese\, Cabernet Sauvignon blend) \nPizza carne e ricotta \n(Italian sausage\, pepperoni\, sun-dried tomatoes and ricotta)\n2014 “The Show” Syrah\, Thompson Vineyard \nA Sweet Ending-Italian Style \nFreshly brewed Coffee or Tea \nPrepaid reservations are essential\, as seating is limited. Kerr\, The Wine Consultant\nSpecial Guests: Lane Tanner\, Winemaker; Will Henry\, Owner \nWednesday\, May 17\, 2017 at 7:00 PM\n$89 per person\, inclusive of tax and gratuity \nThe name Lane Tanner is synonymous with Santa Barbara County and great Pinot Noir (along with other varietals as well). She has been making outstanding wine in the region for 30+ years (she started when she was only 5!). As the first female winemaker in the Central Coast\, she worked at Firestone Winery\, Hitching Post Winery and had her own label from 1989 until just a few years ago. Lumen represents a new partnership for Lane and an opportunity to continue her love of making great wine. According to Lane\, “Lumen is an ode to the old-world style of winemaking with grapes picked at phenolic ripeness instead of high sugars\, resulting in wines lower in alcohol”. \nTonight\, Lane & Lumen owner Will Henry will be on hand to give us the “inside scoop” from Lumen. We’ll enjoy 2 of Lumen’s outstanding Pinot Noirs plus 3 other great wines that reveal the breadth of Lane’s talents. The culinary team at Sam’s has creatively paired each wine with a gourmet food course designed to bring out the best in the wine (and the food).
